Taking care of yourself

~*Taking care of yourself*~

I'm writing this post because i feel that i should share this with the rest of you ladies.

Have been told so many stories of shot-gun weddings, unwanted pregnancies, abortion and whatnot, that i feel obligated to share this with you.

Most of you would have probably heard about this wonderful pill called the Morning after pill. Also known as Postinor-2.

A friend of mine came crying to me telling me how she's worried about getting pregnant cos she did not have protected sex the night before (meaning: no condoms, no pills, or whatsoever precautions at all la).

I took her to the pharmacy to buy the morning after pill.

I'm pretty surprised that most M'sian women have not heard about this. [i've done a survey with the younger kids in college and they're pretty ignorant about it, and for my peers it's a
60 -yes and 40 -no.]

Scenario 1:

Carrie: Have you heard of the morning after pill?
Girl1: huh? nope.

Scenario 2:

Carrie: Do you know what's a morning after pill?
Guy1: Duh! of cos-lah!
Carrie: How you know la?
Guy1: hehe..i just read your blog
Carrie: .....

Scenario 3:

Carrie: Have you heard of the morning after pill?
Guy1: yeah, in fact i bought it before.
Carrie: ...really? what for?
Guy1: for my gf la. u know why la.

No, don't get me wrong now. i'm not definitely NOT advocating the consumption of postinor-2 after intercourse. I just want you to realise that if you've had an accident (unprotected sex due to the spur of the moment passion :P), you need to know what your options are...before it's too late.

In cases like this, ignorant is NOT bliss. You need to be well informed.

How it works?

Postinor-2 is an emergency contraceptive preparation that can prevent conception if it is taken within the first 72 hours following unprotected intercourse.

Unprotected intercourse = when there is no contraceptive measure of any kind taken during intercourse, or when the applied contraceptive measure cannot be considered reliable,
i.e. tear or slip or inappropriate use of condom.

According to data of clinical studies, it is advisable to take the first tablet within 48 hours (but not later than 72 hours) after intercourse. Since the efficacy of the medication decreases if more than 48 hours elapse between intercourse and drug ingestion.

Note: Postinor is not good for your health. You are advised not to take it too often.

Back when i was in Australia, I had a friend who kept going to the GP to ask for the morning after everytime after she's had sex. Even her GP was mad and asked her to go on the pills instead. [Postinor is controlled medicine, where you need a prescription from your doctor. However you can buy over the counter in Msia without a prescription].

Again like they say, prevention is always better than cure. Save yourself the trauma of going through abortion and hasty weddings. Remember you can always buy postinor. Just don't make it a habit. Or better yet, just abstain :P
