Food tasting at JW Marriot

Shukz asked me, Mich and Ching to come along for her food tasting @ Marriot last Saturday. The couple wanted extra opinions as to the kind of dishes they should serve on their wedding reception.

Mich was really a pro in this area. She was giving the couple lots of tips and ideas, one was such: "You see this yellow towel they're serving? This colour will clash with your theme".

The rest of us actually took for granted that the yellow towel was not the actual towel that was gonna be used that night.

But we were so wrong. The waiter confirmed that everything will be "as is". Thanks to Mich's sharp eye, we added lotsa comments on areas that needed to be improved on/changed entirely.

Mich and I were running a lil late as we had to go to Damansara Perdana to return her rented costumes before heading off to Marriot.

But we were glad we didn't miss much. They've just started on the first dish when we arrived. :)

#1 Hot and Cold Dish Combination

I was glad I didn't miss this dish. This is the one dish that I actually look forward to during Chinese wedding dinners.

However, only 2 out of the 4 dishes here were good - the baby octopus ala japanese and the mixed fish cake.

The jelly fish and thai style chicken were a big disappointment.

We requested to change the latter, or...

We can have this one to replace the hot and cold dish combo.

#1 Seafood Ceviche with Lime Mango Mayo and Spanish Marinated Olives

This fusion dish came from the western kitchen. We thought it'd be rather unique to serve this as appetizer instead of the typical chinese dish above (since it wasn't that great to start with anyway).

Only thing was, the portion was a lil too small for a chinese wedding. It'll be great if served in a fine-dining place, however knowing we Chinese are so kiasu, we actually anticipate lotsa comments/complains about the size of the serving. Especially when this is going to be the "first" dish.

Chances are everyone will likely be famished and the portion will not be enough.

Therefore, we requested the following:
To add more greens (salad) as side dish, to make the portion larger. To increase the portion of prawns. And we couldn't locate any olives at all. Therefore, they need to add more olives.

The parents and the in-laws.
On the left - Hsien Yu's parents.
Right - Shuk Yee's parents (obviously).

The bride-to-be Shukz, Ching, and Mich.

Shukz's dad was super entertaining. He was sharing some funny politician jokes with us. Typically, our fave S#my was mentioned.

Like mother like daughter.
Awww..Isn't Shukz looking radiant here?

#2 Braised Shark's Fin Soup with Shredded Chicken and Crab Meat.

MmMmmm...just look at the broth. Every single strand of shark's fin visible here. Damn alot wei!

We had absolutely no complaints at all!

We were kinda hoping to have an "option" to choose for soup. Perhaps a different type of shark's fin soup? LOL!

Talk about being greedy. :P

Another option dish - the chicken.

#3 Traditional Crispy Roasted Chicken with Prawn Crackers (from the Chinese kitchen)

This dish was about as typical a chinese wedding chicken dish as you can get. It was good, but nothing great.

OR...

#3 Chicken Breast Stuffed with Spinach and Feta Cheese Served with Mustard Sauce (from the Western kitchen)

We loved how the chicken was roasted to perfection. The cheese practically oozed out as soon it was cut. YuMmm..

We decided to go with this in-line with the fusion theme.

We added a comment to remind the hotel to ensure that proper cutleries were provided to the guests that night. We cannot possibly be eating this with chopsticks, can we?

The best dish of the day!!

#4 Honey Grilled Prawns.

One word - Perfect!

I can't stop thinking about the prawns. They were super huge, succulent and juicilicious.

We had to double check with the waiter and the head of chef (we call him Ah Keung kor hehe) to confirm if they'll be giving us prawns the exact size (as big) that night. Ah Keung kor said they'll ensure that the exact amount (say 1 kg) will be given. The size of the prawns will depend solely on the catch.

Prawns bigger and fatter than my thumb okay!
I am practically missing them prawns now. The sweet sour sauce complemented the prawns perfectly.

#5 Steamed Sea Bass with Ginger and Supreme Soy Sauce

Erm..it was pretty disappointing. I could smell the sandy/soil smell from the fish when I was eating this dish.

We were thinking of changing the Sea Bass to Patin fish (for a steamed dish) or to change it to Thai style fish as a safer option (cos this is a confirmed good dish).

Next up, Siew Ching's fave dish.

#6 Braised Broccoli with Beancurd Skin and Chinese Black Mushrooms

I'm not a fan of this dish, but Ching said this was good.

We then left the room to camwhore a bit (I could only upload this picture, the rest of them seemed to have been corrupted :(.

We returned in time to catch the last dish - desserts! (we missed the seafood fried rice)

#8 Lotus Seed Pancakes
#9 Double Boiled Longan, Lotus Seeds and Red Dates with Ginger.

I absolutely loved the ginger soup becos it was so so..ginger-ish :P.
I was too busy chowing the pancakes and gulping the soup to even bother taking a picture of the soup. LOL!

But then again, the best dish (no doubt) was still the prawn.

And after a week, I'm experiencing some serious honey grilled prawn withdrawals..

Anyone wanna go Marriot with me this weekend? :P
