Breathtaking Bangkok - Part 1

~*~*~* Breathtaking Bangkok - Part 1*~*~*~
Friday, 23rd March 07

I flew via MAS while my sisters and Ken flew via AirAsia. My supposedly more luxurious flight was the one with faults. I was delayed for an hour. Good thing was I was scheduled to arrive at 1:20pm local time, and the others at 2:25pm.

So, we all arrived at the same time. I was pissed cos no one called me to inform that there’s been a delay. I could have another hour at home. Stupid MAS!

Upon arrival…

Suvarnabumi airport here we come!

This new airport is heaps more impressive than the previous one. It’s so high tech-y with all these
criss-crossing escalators. What a travel-friendly airport!

Took this picture with this pretty Thai lass. She was so obliging..and sweet!
We have no idea who or what this aurinko matkat is.. ??

In the cab..on the expressway!

It took us 1.5 hrs to reach Pratunam. Thanks to the infamous Bangkok traffic. We were so close yet so far. It would have only taken 30 mins, if not for the traffic really..

We stayed at a hotel along Rajadamri Road. It’s walking distance to Gaysorn – this high-end-upmarket shopping centre which houses brands like...

(note: you may find inconsistency in our dressing. Some pix are from Day 2 instead of 1 or 3, in other words: very random!)

Louis Vuitton!!!

Gucci!!

Loewe!!

ouch my head!

We want this!

Along this street too, you’ll find lotsa food and clothes vendors. You’ll never starve here..nor run out of clothes to wear...really!

The mango salad is fantastic!

This man is preparing one my favourite drinks in Bangkok. It's freshly squeezed mandarin orange juice. 20 baht a bottle. Super refreshing on a hot day!

Ice-blended green tea, milk tea, strawberry, lychee, etc with pearls @ 10 baht a cup.

This street will get very busy towards noon. Now, it's early morning and they're just setting up.

Nuts anyone?

We took the BTS – Bangkok’s skytrain, similar to our LRT. BUT only MUCH better! Our first stop was Soi Lai Lai Sub, in Silom.

BTS moments…

We were tempted to watch Mr Bean in thai..ehehe

We had to climb flights of stairs to reach the platform..Just look at the traffic jam will ya?

To reach Soi Lai Lai Sub (which is in Chong Nonsi station), we had to interchange at Siam station. And Siam Paragon is having an event that night. The crowd was amazing and there’s this sexy thai woman(i hope it's a woman) singing and grooving on stage.

This building has a huge cola bottle at the top. It’s just opposite Siam Paragon.

Why did I say the BTS is better than our Msian LRT? They kept playing cool advertisements (they look like those award winning ones..very creative) on tv to amuse us. Not many repeats too. (TV is on the left of Ken's head).

@ Soi Lai Lai Sub....

Found this very cute looking + pretty + tasty dessert.
I’ve asked around, my tailor told me this is a crispy wafer/pancake with sweet white cream filling. 20 baht for a box (RM2 only). Cheap!
They’ve got really large ones at MBK Center.
Can someone please make and sell this here? Pls!

Caryn n Ken enjoying the crispy pancake.

Claudine finally managed to eat her fave fried chicken. 10 baht for a piece of drumstick. It was super tasty. She absolutely must have their fried chicken everytime she comes to Thailand. Chicken addict!

these pork skewers only cost us 5 baht each!! Really sweet n juicy! Wish we had more.

We were quite disappointed as we arrived around 6:30pm and most of the shops here at Soi Lai Lai Sub were closed already. =(

I was recommended this place by a local friend, uncle Pichai. He said that most OLs working around Silom (this place is surrounded by Banks and Embassies) shop here during lunch hour. And things here are nice and affordable.

We only found this one shoe shop..and we were so pleasantly surprised to see that most of the shoes were on sale! 199 baht! OMG-ness!!!!

Dilemma dilemma. Sis couldnt decide between the white or black? Aiyah, just get both la!

However, most of the smaller sizes were gone. =(
They don’t really carry a lot of stocks here…

I didn’t get to buy any of the 199 stuff.
Only the new arrivals were in my size..bought 2 pairs of heels from here.
Got them for around 359 – 399 baht a pair. Saw the same pair at MBK selling at 459. =)

Off to Sukhumvit to find a tailor...

We checked out only 2 stores as I’ve scouted the area before and we didn’t really wanna waste much time haggling for price, etc.

Brought them to the two tailors I’ve been to before.

Tailor no 1: MYER at Soi 15. However, the guy (Johnny) I used to deal with is no longer there and the boss wasn’t very eager to serve us..

So off we went to Tailor no 2: George at Soi 11. My bro made a few suits and lotsa shirts (with French cuffs) here before as well.

Ken got a bargain. A set of pin-stripe suit, 4 shirts with French cuffs, all for 7700 baht (RM770).

George (the boss) taking Ken’s measurements.

Interesting finds as we walked along Sukhumvit..

signs saying “XXX DVD” “Sexy DVD” “I have more” everywhere!

Ken was really impressed with this huge penis

Sis was flabbergasted..

Soap carving

You can look-see around this area (Sukhumvit). The clothes they sell here are of the type of quality similar to those you get at Petaling St (not super nice, but ok-ok only). The prices however are very reasonable as they serve more locals here. I once bought some deco pieces here for 280 baht (similar price at Chatuchak market), and the opening price for the same set was at least 600 baht at Patpong.

Patpong is way too over-priced cos lotsa tourists frequent the area. It’s famous for its pubs and rowdy, sleazy night life if you know what I mean…

Back to Sukhumvit..

I found some cute stuffs..

beautifully carved floral soaps..75 baht each, we brought the price down to 50 each.

Cute tea sets! Managed to bargain from 400 down to 200 baht a set.

Salt & pepper shakers!

Us girls sitting outside a souvenir shop. *roar*

Off to Cabbages & Condoms for dinner....

Cabbages and Condoms offers a pleasant dining experience in several locations around Thailand. Not only do the restaurants offer excellent food, but they also promote the health and safety aspects of condom use in a fun and amusing manner. All proceeds from the restaurants are used to fund social development programs.

What's with the name anyway?

Cabbages are a common food in Northeast Thailand, in fact they are a staple part of the diet, they are grown in all villages, there are everywhere and everybody uses them. Now, if condoms could be as common and used as often, then some of the population and health problems facing Thailand could be overcome!

But then, perhaps if you think babies are born under cabbages, then you do need condoms. There are several versions of the name of the restaurant, but whatever the interpretation the meaning is good quality, affordable Thai food served in a pleasant environment. And guaranteed not to make you pregnant.

Cabbages and Condoms needless to say has a major theme of condoms. The world's largest collection of national brand condoms is displayed around the walls and the carpet up the stairs has cartoons of typical condoms for various trades and professions woven into the fabric.

Instead of serving after dinner mints, there are bowls of condoms located at the exits just in case. Haha!

This top is made up of contraceptive pills (yellow n blue) and condoms (the sash)

condom tree with lights

Condom santa

Ken caressing her boobies.. :P

Caryn doing a better job than Ken!

Cute condom kitten

Dinner time...

tomyam gung

Duck with red curry..fantastic!

Our fave drink: Coconut juice!

A pretty lass performing on a traditional instrument during dinner

We felt a little out of place at Cabbages & Condoms as we were the only Asians there, besides the staff waiting. The rest of the ppl were caucasians. Kinda felt like we've entered into a touristy-makan-place instead. The food, however, was authentic and truly Thai. =)

After makan, i brought them to shop at the bazaar along Gaysorn.

Lots of stuffs to shop here...and the quality is much better. The clothings and bags are more unique and look nicer.

But this is the ultimate! Our highlight for the night:

We found this stall doing manicure nail art for only 50 baht. GEt this, RM5 for 10 fingers, all with nail art! Gosh...crazy.

There was quite a queue, we waited till about 11+ for us to finish our shopping before doing our manicure.

We started at about 11:45pm, took us about 45 mins...15 mins each. Damn fast! And pretty! By the time it was my turn (last), all the lights were off, and we were the last ppl there on the street. Dodgy..but for the sake of vanity..

Lotsa designs to choose from. We couldn't speak the language, but we could point to her what we want.

The manicurist was good. She didn't even refer to the book for the designs at all. Everything was in her head! Kudos!

Final touches..

3 very different colours and design. Claudine = black, Me = dark purple, Caryn = red

My two sisters were so exhilarated that they were saying they wanna do manicure everynight!

Siao! :P

That was how we spent our first day in the City of Angels.
